OMG

OMG SPRING!!!!!!! In NW at the base of the hills.

Duh . . . hut.

  • May. 14th, 2008 at 11:40 PM
Where are some hip places to go on a Wednesday night? I'd prefer to stay away from pretension if I can. I want a place with some good dancing music. Good prices on drinks would be nice, but not entirely necessary 'cause I might not be drinking. Please do not recommend establishments that charge an entrance(cover) fee. That shit is ridiculous.

Thanks.

I want to do one too!

  • May. 14th, 2008 at 11:35 PM
I don't care if it was originally a "post this in a comment" post, other people are doing one and now I want to do one. It's past my bedtime. I regret nothing.

Why do you like Steampunk? Hot chicks in corsets. Sorry, I really have to be honest about this one - it makes people hot. Especially chicks. In corsets. Also boots.
Favorite bit of clothing: At the moment, my new boots that are both sexy AND comfortable, forming a quantum singularity in my footwear universe.
Favorite accessory: Fuck, are boots clothing or accessory? Um, my crochet hook.
Cake or Pie?: Cakepie, actually
Best music in the world is?: Baroque recorder concertos

Introductions and salutations

  • May. 14th, 2008 at 11:22 PM
I neglected to make an introductory post before my glasses/goggles inquiry, so I shall post one now.

Name: Kathryn
Location: Humboldt County, CA
Why do you like Steampunk? Science fiction + Victoriana + hot guys + cool music via a detour through Goth
Favorite bit of clothing: Black corduroy jacket styled vaguely like riding attire, customized with Venice lace and airship Ophelia patch
Favorite accessory: Stripy socks
Cake or Pie?: Chocolate Cake
Best music in the world is?: Any classical before the 1900s, Abney Park, Rasputina, classic Goth
Do you have a Persona?: Still working on it. Will probably involve time travel and mad science. I haven't signed up on Brass Goggles because I haven't even come up with a good screen name.
Are you a good egg?: Mostly. Just don't interrupt me in the lab!
Pictures: Arrgh. I forgot to ask anyone to photograph me at Maker Faire with my new hat & goggles.
i posted about losing my kitten earlier today. well, no definite news, but! tiny paws prints have been found all over in the basement, and meows heard from below. she seems to hide when we go down. there's effluvia from 1940 onward packed in down there (weirdest old shit), and lots of little crawl spaces. the spaces to the outside are sealed, and the tuna we put out to entice her has been eaten a little, so she's definitely down there and it's just a matter of waiting for her to decide to come out. thanks so much, deepee, for your guidance when i was afreakinout kitten helicopter parent.

i guess she'll come out when she's ready. and probably get to investigate some old mid century snow boots in the meantime. she was a really inquisitive, adventurous kitten who'd been in the shelter awhile. i think this is probably good for her, though it's nerve-wracking for me and [info]fuzzferatu.

for future reference, things i learned to do if you lose a cat/animal in portland:

  • report it to multnomah county animal control, through this form; be sure to fill it out fully (put something in every box), because they don't notify you if it's incomplete

  • call the microchip company, if they're chipped, to make absolutely sure they have the right info (they had the wrong info for me and because it was an emergency they got the info corrected sooner)

  • call the oregon humane society and give them a description of the animal; animals are often brought there when found

  • tell your neighbors; animals tend to stay close to home when they're used to being indoors

  • thanks so much again! i'm excited for my kitty to come out and meet me when she's good & ready. until then, i'll bring her food and water and try to entice her out.

Joss Whedon Tries His Hand At Steampunk

    • May. 15th, 2008 at 1:49 AM
I don't know if anyone's seen this, but a comic book store just opened up near me and the first time I stepped in, I was immediatly drawn to some very steampunky covers on a comic, re-imagining Marvel's The Runaways. The premise is these kids find out their parents are super villians and they... well, run away.

Joss Whedon, of Buffy the Vampire and Firefly fame, is writing it. It takes place in a steampunkish Victorian setting and while I've only gotten my hands on a few issues, the artwork is wonderful and the writting really good.

    Check out these pictures )
I just happened to be on FOX when along comes the scrolly thing down on the bottom of the screen with this gem:

There is some sort of Police Activity at NE 82nd and Multnomah in Portland. There aren't a lot of details, but we do know that Portland's SERT team is involved. The scene is less than a mile from a SERT callout last night. We'll continue to follow the developments, and bring you the details, first on Fox News.

Somewhere, out there, in the night...shit is goin down!!!

The Death of Rock and Roll

    • May. 14th, 2008 at 9:30 PM
x-posted from my journal in light of today's DP discussion of dead restaurants

Mark Lindsay's Rock N Roll cafe is DEAD. Long live whatever the fuck they put in its place.

    051408 closed for business

There was much anticipation as the nice brick building was refurbished in the Hollywood District of NE Portland. What would go in that richly-colored edifice? An environmentally-conscious corporation? A cool bar, steeped in the local customs of divey atmosphere and great beer?

Or, you know, maybe a poorly-executed "theme" restaurant, headlined by a long-washed-up 60's heartthrob pop star, maybe?
More Behind the Music, coming up next... )

    Hangover cures?

    • May. 14th, 2008 at 9:19 PM
Everyone's got one, so I might as well ask: What are your favorite hangover "remedies"? I chug water, take alarming doses of ibuprofen, and keep my face in the pillow for as long as possible. This morning I also had an uncontrollable craving for bread, which I'd never experienced before, but I scarfed five or six slices and I think it might've actually helped.

    PS1 Emulation

    • May. 14th, 2008 at 9:00 PM
Do any of you Portland locals know anything about PS1 Emulation on a PC? I've got a crap-town of Playstation games I've been wanting to play lately, but my PS is now toast. I'm having problems getting the emulators configured right, and would like to meet up with someone who knows them to just hang out, and show me how they're set up. I'll tempt you with beer, too, if that's your poison.

I've tried setting them up my own, but godsbedamned the options and shit are confusing me. NES emulators are way easier.

    Corset Inspired Gray Boots

    • May. 14th, 2008 at 10:46 PM
While looking around for cosplay purposes, I thought Hot Topic may have the shoes I needed. They certainly did, at a good price, too. Though, while I was poking about, I came across these shoes, also at a good price, and thought I should mention it to those of the community looking for gray corset inspired heels. Enjoy!

Has anyone else seen pictures of Sarah Jessica Parker's hat from the "Sex and the City: The Movie" premiere in London?

It's a bit frou-frou -- a green rose, butterflies and feathers with a base like an acorn button-- but I think it has serious potential as a steampunk fascinator or topper.

    St. Helens Gifts

    • May. 14th, 2008 at 6:11 PM
Does anyone know if there's anyplace around that sells Mt St Helens gifts anymore? Not just magnets and keychains, but ash from the blow and things made from the ash. Somewhere that's not 1 1/2 hours away? Google fails me.

I wanted to know what other damnportlanders, (in particular, of the female variety) think about this:

Obama has apologized for the demeaning way he addressed a reporter recently, “Senator, how are you going to help the American autoworkers,”

    Agar asked Obama.

    “Hold on one second, sweetie,”

...reporter Jim Rutenberg pointed out this wasn’t the first time Obama used the word: “Back in Pennsylvania in early April, Senator Barack Obama took some heat for calling a female factory worker ‘sweetie,’ in Allentown.”

Obama apologized in a voicemail he left on Agar’s cell phone at 3:16 p.m:

    In part:

“Second apology is for using the word ‘sweetie.’ That’s a bad habit of mine...”

    doctor recommendations

    • May. 14th, 2008 at 4:58 PM
Can anyone recommend a good dermatologist and OB/GYN in Portland? Not looking for anything fancy or cosmetic surgery docs. Bonus points if they take Providence.

    Thanks!

    Pigs blood, anyone?

    • May. 14th, 2008 at 4:44 PM
I'm woefully uneducated about butcher shops here in Portland, and the might Google has failed me in finding information, so I come to you.

I need about two pints of pigs blood for a photoshoot I'm doing on the 24th. I need to know locations of butcher shops (or anywhere else that sells animal blood), and pricing, if you know it. If not, just locations that I can call or visit.

I'm in SE, about five minutes from downtown, so I can pretty much travel anywhere as long as it doesn't mean an hour long bus ride or anything.

    2. Procedural Alcoholic

    3. OO Alcoholic
... but what the hell is up with the Sleep Country TV ads using the Sleep Country lady's voice with someone else lip-synching the words? That's weirding me out pretty bad.

Bet the Sleep Country lady isn't so hot about it, either.

Industrial accident? Eczema flareup? Random makeup disaster?

If you're gonna go Stepford Wife style, go all the way! Come back, Sleep Country lady!! Come back!

    P.S. -- I don't believe any of this. I want conspiracy theories.

    this season's finale question - non-spoiler

    • May. 14th, 2008 at 10:34 PM
am i right in thinking that the final 3 hours are effectively one continuous episode split into 1 and 2 hour chucks shown across two weeks with a week's break in between?

if that is indeed the case, i think i'll save and watch all three together!

does anyone know if what i've said is true?

Youtube Comments make Web 2.0 Cry

    • May. 14th, 2008 at 1:57 PM
I'm having a hard time fathoming any section of the internet that is more despicable than the comments of Youtube. The worst part about it is that I'll bet good money that some of those inane, terrible commenters are members of this community.
